It is no small thing to ponder the meaning and the purpose of one's life: of every life! Certainly since the invasion of consciousness into the barely-human minds of our very distant ancestors, we have wondered... Sadly, there are seemingly huge numbers of folks walking around, going to school or work, starting relationships and families, voting, etc. etc. without giving evidence of either deep thought or of wonder... Religion, as often as not, has become an escape from wonderment into creeds and systems of belief ("right thinking")... It could a passing phrase in a book, the death of a parent, or a chance glance at the rising sun, but at some point some of us have heard a still, silent, voice calling us... calling us to turn, once again, into wonderment...
Wonderment is the condition of the rising mystic...
Somehow, we become aware of the limitations of our lives: an eventual end to our life is the biggie. But even before our needed dwelling on that eventuality, all sorts of limitations have come our way: the ending of childhood dreams (for me, I knew that I was either going to play centerfield on the LA Dodgers, or become President of the United States); the ending of school; the ending of jobs; the ending of hopes for a certain or special someone; the ending of friend relationships... you know how this list could go on and on...
But here's the thing: we came into this world with endings as our conditioned acceptance into life, didn't we? Think about your breath... why, of course! Every breath ends and all breath will cease... but! we also came into this world with beginnings impregnated, if you will, within the essence of our very being: we inhale again! This is our essential religion: it is the mystic-spirituality that automatically comes with us...
Thus, building your sacred life is a practiced awareness / wonderment of your breath... your breath flows like a river, revolves within you like a moon, and invites you into an expanding consciousness... you read just a bit about quantum physics, like the book Self Aware Universe by Amit Goswami), and suddenly consciousness is known by you as the wonderment it is! Not only does your breath flow, but consciousness does as well... from the First Thought By the First Mind, consciousness has risen, seeking, living as an experience of evolution... from stars to algae, from trees to birds; from "lesser" to always higher, from simpler always to more complex; until mammal became human and consciousness found a spectacular home... Your breath and your consciousness are One: a participation in a consciousness that pervades, and yet somehow, transcends all being and matter... this is root spirituality, ready for your exploration...
Part Two, coming Monday December 7...
